I'm changing my 4-speed gearbox in my 1975 TX sedan to a 5 speed out of a 1985 TG sedan...
I've just pulled out my old 4-speed and my polished five speed is ready to go in...but the rear mount sits approximately 8cm further back and i can't bolt it up to the floor. On the old four speed there were two posible mounting positions, so i used the position that was closest to the engine and this mounted up sweet. The 5 speed has only one possible mounting hole for use with the current rear mount, and this position will not line up with the holes in the floor!!!
Is there an adapter to shift the rear gearbox mount further forward, or will i have to dodgy something together.
Has anyone else had this problem ??? |

Hi G Box,
I had this very problem with my TX, as they simply weren't made to take the 5spd, but it can be done one of two different ways. Here are your choices:
1) Have someone make up a special rear box crossmember which goes forward from the box mount to the existing floor mounts.
2) Have an engineer move the floor mounts back 70mm (or thereabouts, which unfortunately requires some engineering knowledge.
I went for solution number 2.
If going for #1, which will be easier, you run the risk of the new crossmember not being strong enough and flexing when the car is under acceleration or heavy load. This is not good and will cause vibration among all kinds of weird feelings of sloppiness and it may even drop the tailshaft on you. Not good for a 'performance' vehicle.
With #2 (I might write this up as a workshop soon...):
1) Remove most of your interior, front seats, carpet, underlining.
2) Jack the car up securely a fair way off the ground on a nice concrete floor. Remove your 4spd.
3) Unstitch the existing mounts on the floorpan. The mounts are only spot welded on, so using a special drill you can unstick those, being careful not to drill right through. There may be other ways to do this.
4) Clean the underside of the floorpan roughly where the new mounts will go (just sight them up roughly) with a steel brush or similar.
5) Put the 5spd in and move the mounts to see where they need to be. Don't worry about the mounts being the wrong height, you'll have to modify these too. Mark out on the floor where the mounts must now go. Leave the 5spd in.
6) Clean the mounts up with a steel brush. Modify them so that the gearbox will bolt up in the horizontal position, as it did previously. Chop out with an angle grinder the highest corner of the mounts and beat the living daylights out of them until they fit the floor. The transmission tunnel is a different shape 70mm futher back, which necessitates the mounts be modified. Leave the 5spd in.
7) Take a break and recount where you're up to, check everything is right. Step 6 is a pain in the ass but there is more to come. Do not consume beer during this break.
8) Once the mounts appear to fit the floor, lightly bolt the crossmember up. Have someone hop inside the car with a water spray bottle to cool the floor when welding. There will be remnants of fluffy underliner and tar which can catch on fire (they did with me, but I was prepared). With everything in its right place, tack weld the mounts to the floor just enough to keep them there.
9) Make sure the tailshaft does not foul anything and that everything is still alighned correctly. If not, it could cause you hassles later with vibration or worse.
10) Take the fuqqin box out again (do not be tempted to reach for beer. laughter, silliness and tiredness will be settling in, you WILL laugh at anything . Now, with a decent welder, weld the mounts to the floor properly.
11) Once those are welded in (and surfaces have cooled), paint over the bare floor sections with either klllrust, tar, engineering paint sh!t or a combination of all three. As long as the bare metal is covered.
12) Fit the fuqqin box for the final time, connecting the clutch and ancilliaries. You can still use the speedo cable from the 4spd, but you may need a newie anyways.
13) Beware of the reverse switch. What looks like one on top of the box isn't. It does something else I haven't figured out. The reverse switch is still on the left. You may need to cut the top or gring the top of the switch on top of the box so it doesn't hit the tranny tunnel.
14) It is best to do all of this with the gearstick removed. I don't think it is possible otherwise anyways. While you're at it, pop a tube of Nulon Teflon gearbox stuff in. My 5th gear was a tad noisy, this helped.
15) Take her for a quiet test drive to see if everything works. Come back and jack the car up, give her a checkover just to be sure. Then go out and give her a fang I advise another check and retension the bolts.
16) Now you may consume some beers and get ready for some much needed relaxation and sleep. Go for a big drive tomorrow when you're awake :)
I hope this helps. As you can see, TXs weren't meant to have a 5spd, but it can be done. It is well worth it in the money you save on fuel. When my TX was alive I could stretch fuel economy on a trip to almost 650km from a 53L (??) tank.
Cheers |

What month and year is your Gemini. Could be that you have one of the extremely early TX's. You may find that a lot of the suff you have from later models will not fit at all into your TX.
The Floor on your TX is stepped where the rear gearbox mount goes, correct. Do you still have the stepped mount. You also have the seats that bolt through the floor and have the dished washers to hold them on the floor.
I had these problems in my first TX rally car and had to construct a gearbox mount. Admittedly I only ran the 4 speed, and most other rally people steered well clear of them. I had to modifly the roll cage to include seat mounts, similar to the V8's so there was no stress on the floor pan.
The doors are nice and light cause they have no intrusion bars in them. You should also check that if you are going to fit xtractors that they do in fact fit before you purchase them. This was also another problem with my previous car. The floor pan was slightly different, and the exhaust rubbed on the floor before I realised the problem.
If you need, give as a hoy. |

mmm...thanks for that exteneded reply...i don't think i'll be putting my gearbox in tonight after that !!!! i've just been under the car and i was thinking of fabricating an adaptor....i think i could get it strong enough....anyway...must find some suitable metal and possibly run the adaptor to join the cross member behind the box (under the tail-shaft...)...anyway....i'm thinking out loud now....
--> put that post in the workshop for sure....!!!!
thanks....G Box. |

yeah...
there have been heaps of little differences that i have noticed from putting various parts into my gem from later models...
my Gem was built in May 1975.
i don't have the stepped mount ... i actually have a smaller flat mount with evenly cut holes in (if you know what i'm talking about....)
but yeah...thanks for the help...where are you from...i'm in Brisbane (north-side) |

Luv to come and help, but it is about 1200 k's from my place. I'm in Canberra (Belconnen).
Your gearbox mount is the correct one for the later TX being flat. The mount should have a rubber grommet in the centre. There should be a bolt through this which goes into a stepped centre plate with a captive nut. This plate, then bolts onto the gearbox (two bolts). There are two mounting points, before and after the speedo cable mount. The plate should bolt up behind this mount.
I have placed a photo onto my site of the gearbox, and other things.
I wrote an article for the Gemini site about putting in a gearbox, clutch and flywheel but as yet Adam has not put it up.
My site is here http://mcmrallysport.tripod.com
it is not finished, but has some info. |
