Without meaning to sound dumb...
How does one tell if the gear box is "good" and the quality of "good" it is without fitting it to the car & shit?

aside from pulling it all apart and checking, all you can really do is check to see if all the gears are there. Apart from that, you basically have to test drive it.

if you can test drive it check for the 3RD - 2ND downchange as it usually goes first
