How big can you get the wheels on a gem before you have to go to the extent of flaring the guards??

No idea, width wise I know 205 tyres are doable (I know, mine are 205s) which means with the correct offset 215s might fit, you never know, it would depend on the manufacturer of the tyres etc etc....
Wheel width really doesn't matter a lot, as long as the wheel is wide enough to hold the tyre and not too wide it really shouldn't effect it. That said my wheels are 6 inches wide and I wouldn't expect to be able to fit any more than that, perhaps 6.5..... |

As for width, one of my cars has 8 1/2 rear dragway rims with 235/60/14 under non flared gaurds, only rolled. Its very low, but its a 2 seater coupe, so it never really has to take a lot of weight which "might" make it scrub out.
As for size in general, I have one that has 225/50/15 under rolled gaurds on the rear, and one that has 225/50/16 under rolled rear gaurds with 205/50/16 on the front. |
