hey people i was just wondering where abouts u guys and girls have put your subs, i was thinking that (in a sedan) if you put it in your boot the fuel tank might make it sound wierd, and also which way do yous have it facing? i heard that you get a deeper beefier sound if ya face em backwards, has anyone tried to put it in your parcel shelf? does this work any good?

funny question this one......
my current ride has 2 8"subs with 6x9 speakers on the parcel shelf , and my old black flare kit car(TD) had 2 12"subs on the parcel tray as well

Were all of your subs quite shallow, or did you reinforce and space out the shelf heaps?

It depends on wheter you like the sound of a free air sub, I am assuming you didn't box them, and just ran them free air?

From memory, they're more efficient (more db) when boxed, and people get better results with them facing backwards. This is how mine is setup. The fuel tank isn't a hassle, as is doesn't block the boot off, the rear seat is the issue, it blocks more bass than the tank anyway. Mine is noticably louder with the boot open, than in the car. I bought some vents to put in the parcel shelf, I feel this will help out.

Most people say that boxed subs are much louder "bassier", but freeair's have a bit extra "punch" if you know what I mean. I reckon boxed subs shit all over freeair's personally, but as with 90% of things (especially when it comes to audio), it depends on the person handing over their hard-earned. I saw a conversion for a "drop-tank" style fuel tank on a gem in a magazine a few years ago, can't remember the magazine name or anything (I have it lying around somewhere), but I do remember that the guy that was doing the conversion said that it was suprisingly easy to do, and wouldn't cost an arm and a leg...So if you want a couple of boxed 12"'s, perhaps thats the way to go?

Yeah Pual I tend to agree with the boxed sub opinion, I would never float a sub unless someone paid me good money and it wasn't my car.

The way I'm doin sub boxes is to get rid og the spare area kinda and to have the boxes on either side of the boot facing the middle and angled up at the bootlid a bit, should make for some decent sound rather than facing into the back seat where the sound will be absorbed. Plus I need my normal tank until I can work out what I'm doing drop tank wise... (Leroy: can you contact me about this again please... I have more things to discuss... have you able to do an overflow for the pod? - SunsetPC@bigpond.net.au ... oh and sorry bout the sick site everyone (goat secx).. not mine..)

The reason you face a sub towards the bootlid is that the bass is amplified by bouncing it off something metal. dont worry about the back seat or petrol tank, the frequency of a sub is so low it will travel right through it. the petrol tank conversion is a half hour job!! all you need is the setup from a panno and a welder. any pannel beater can do it for you. personally its not worth the effort, ive heard my sub in a car without the eptrol tank blocking and the sound is the same.

Pete, my Tank is not for the Sub theory, it's for the ceter of balance change that everyone loves so much :)

BASS PASSES THROUGH METAL!! not bounces of it. the number one rule is never us a metal surface in ur bass setup!, bass frequincies travel through 1st air 2nd water 3rd metal

i will let everybody in on a secret about a gem droptnk.....
If you use a xm xp falcon sedan fuel tank,it fits perfectly between the chassis rails (after you cut the rusty boot floor out) and then you use a torana fuel door to hold the no plate and for the hole the fuel goes into use a gem wagon fuel hole with the sedan filler neck cut to the right length so you can still use the original fuel cap that way u dont need another key....
I have done 2 gems with this style of tanks
P.S move your window washer bottle to where the fuel used to go and then watch all the funny looks as u fill your apparent fuel tank with water!!!!!

if you are doing it yourself (and you probly already know this but)

make sure you wire the speakers in phase or one will suck in the others sound, especially bad if they are facing eachother.... play with your wiring till it sounds good basically!

In the beginning of my post i said the reason people face subs towards the boot is to so that the sound is bounced off the metal. obviouslt i then wouldnt turn around and say it will pass through the fuel tank. read it again. Ben said the backseat is an issue, but i was saying that the frequency that a sub puts out is so low that it will pass through foam.
its ok, i forgive you for making this mistake.
