You could do a pretty good turbo setup for $1500 on a 1.6.

Fully rebuilt 2 litre bottom end, new pistons/rings/bearings, fully balanced with (lightened)flywheel, ported and polished G161Z with 44mm inlet and 36mm exhaust valves and 10:1. Cam to suit your driving style (how hard do you want to rev it?)... twin sidedraught webers and a set of extractors... tasty.

you should probably get extractors, weber or holley carby, bigger head or just go for a new motor like a jackaroo or rodeo (or however its spellt) or put a turbo on it

Then I would recommend he saves an extra $150... buys a CA18DET S13 halfcut... and then waits until he can afford to fit it;

Surge tank
High pressure fuel pump
High pressure fuel lines
Tailshaft
Speedo drive
Sump clearance (???)
Engine mounts
Gearbox crossmember
Radiator plumbing
Intercooler plumbing
Wiring
Dump pipe
Exhaust
Compliance (perhaps requiring a brake upgrade)

im with you Adam G
how old are you insurance is a killer
for about $550.00 / $600.0 you could put a 50hp plate nitrous kit .
put in a cam / extractors / and a webber carb.
the combo for a 15sec maybe even high 14sec.
1st but get rid of the auto there is hp killer there

there is only one trottle in a bottle

But he said he has $1500 to spend, not another $150 for a CA18DET and then another $1000 or so for the acessories you listed. Sure, efi is nice WRT part throttle efficiency, but in power terms, for $1500, nothing beats a good blow through intercooled turbo setup.

And if spending a bit more is allowed, for just around $2500, I have an engine with over twice the power output of a standard CA18DET (140hp for non-intercooled I think).

I think late model engines are the ultimate due primarily to head & manifold design, but it costs a hell of a lot to install one, a project can esaily total twice the cost of the engine.
