Whats the best way of getting the paint of my gem?
Paint Stripper (chemical)
Dry Sanding (with an orbital)
Wet Sanding?
I've tried stripper once before and it didn't work very well (patchy and shit)
So i'm wondering of maybe wet sanding would be the way to go?
any help would be appreciated

Why didn't the stripper work?? I've used it, and it worked fine. Do you have access to an electric sander? If not, I recommend getting one...stripping a whole car by hand with sandpaper would be an absolute bitch of a job.

I've just used the chemical on my car 5 layers of paint 2 layers of bog and 2 of primer on the worst spots, came off beatifully. You just have to slosh it on and LEAVE it on for a matter of 30 mins maybe up to an hour for it to penetrate. Sometimes you need 2 coats of the stuff, but the key is leaving it until it looks like it's almost dry.

One of the tricks with stripper is to cover it with plastic film (gladwrap) and leave it overnight. This stops the solvents in the stripper evaporating. I did this using a gel stripper and oftentimes, when I peeled the plastic off, most of the paint stuck to it leaving a bare metal surface. pretty neat.
I also used a wire cup brush on an angle grinder and it did a good job. Wouldn't use it on large panels though, it tends to heat the metal a fair bit.
Finally gave the shell to a reputable blaster and was that a great time-saver!

yep use the plastic over the panels but before you put it on use a nail or something sharp and put scratches all over the paint so the striper can get in easier thats how panel shops do it |

How much do chemical strippers sell for and how much was needed for your gems?

Well i paid 11 bucks for a litre...
its was thick and gooey and i left it for the prescribed 15 mins and it worked shithouse, only some areas got through the three layers and now it is patchy as and im pissed. But i'll do it properly and try the gladwrap and overnight or maybe just a few hours trick.
I'd love to sand it back but its the bonnet which is quite thin and i would definatly end up putting to much heat into it. |
